NOW THAT YOU'VE MADE THE DECISION TO GET FIT AND JOIN let's look at the things you should consider when choosing your gym. There are many Gyms and Health Clubs available for the consumer to choose from and they all have their strengths and weaknesses relative to the individuals needs. Many people who join gyms end up dissatisfied, as in general commercial gyms have a very high turnover rate. This, although a necessary evil for most gyms to survive, also poses a problem for the industry, as many people end up with a negative attitude to fitness and the industry in general. A number of factors will influence people to drop out, here are a few you need to be aware of : - Poor service and equipment in the gym - People find they find they don't enjoy training - Results aren't seen as quickly as they expected - Can't get to the equipment they need during peak training hours - They are uncomfortable in a gym environment - Financial or time commitment too great |
OK, SO HOW DO WE MINIMISE THE LIKELYHOOD OF DROPPING OUT?Here are a few tips on what to look for.1. Choose a gym to fit your needs.Select a gym that has the staff, equipment and class schedules to meet your fitness objectives. Ask yourself what your needs are - do you require personal training, cardio and aerobic classes, heavy weights, child minding, late classes etc. Make a list, compare what the gym offers and don't sign up if your expectations aren't met. 2. Make sure it is convenient to your home or work place. Don't make going to the gym become a chore otherwise it will be easy to find an excuse not to attend a training session. Look at parking facilities offered, equipment waiting times, ease of access and travel times. 3. Up to date equipment in good working order. Look at the state of the equipment - cables that aren't frayed, padding that isn't cracked, clean machines that move smoothly, 'out of order' equipment. 4. Cleanliness and Comfort. Clean locker rooms, toilets and showers which cater for the number of members likely to avail themselves of the facility. Are the facilities kept at a comfortable temperature? Air-conditioning and good ventilation is particularly important during the summer months. Motivational music. 5. Friendly staff and enthusiastic atmosphere. You should feel confident in the people you are dealing with are they helpful and friendly towards you. Always follow your 'gut' feel. You need to train in a positive environment in order to be happy. 6. Price Whilst this is a factor, make sure you don't make it the only criteria you use for your final choice. Check out a few gyms in the area and compare the value you are getting value for your money. Most gyms offer a number of payment plans and options. Make sure you do not over commit yourself. A lot of gyms offer 'trial periods' you can avail yourself of. READ THE CONDITIONS BEFORE YOU SIGN ANY AGREEMENT. ASK QUESTIONS OF BOTH THE PROPRIETORS AND THE MEMBERS BEFORE YOU COMMIT YOURSELF. Once you have made your decision make sure you keep up with your training schedule. GOOD LUCK! |
